AHOME Housing Hall of Fame Awards Celebration!

Michael Scheurer is the Community Housing Officer spearheading our NOVA outreach efforts. If anyone knows what's going on with affordable housing in Northern Virginia, it's Michael. We asked him to report from the field and share upcoming events in case you're interested. This edition focuses on the AHOME Hall of Fame Awards.

The AHOME Hall of Fame Awards celebration is May 8 at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Conference Center in Arlington. This annual event honors those who have significantly advocated and enhanced the production of affordable housing opportunities in Northern Virginia, and Fairfax County specifically.

For those who may not know, AHOME is a non-profit coalition of community businesses, developers, financial organizations, unions, resident organizations and other non-profit public service groups helping meet community needs for affordable housing in Northern Virginia.

2013 Award Winners

This year’s award winners include Tom Davis, former member of Congress and Fairfax County Board Chair. Tom is being honored for his support of affordable and workforce housing, including the adoption of the Fairfax County Affordable Dwelling Unit (ADU) Ordinance that mandated affordable rental and ownership units throughout the county. This was the first inclusionary housing ordinance in the county and one of the first in the nation.

Kate Hanley, former Secretary of the Commonwealth and Fairfax County Board Chair, is also being honored. Kate has been a long-time supporter of affordable housing opportunities in Fairfax County and was County Board Chair during the early implementation of the ADU ordinance. She also has been active in homeless programs and serves on the Board of HomeAid of Northern Virginia. VHDA has been very supportive of HomeAid, which recently dedicated a totally rehabilitated 12-unit apartment building operated by Community Lodging in Alexandria.

Last but not least, we’re proud to announce that former VHDA Commissioner and Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority Chairman Jerry Hopkins is also being recognized for his years of support for affordable housing development.

In addition to the awards ceremony, the event will include a presentation of Northern Virginia’s economic conditions and trend by Jonathan Smoke, Chief Economist at Hanley Wood.
